Schäfer Carousel System: SCS

With regard to dynamic applications with Goods-to-Man order picking in the high-speed range, SSI Schaefer continually develops intelligent state-of-the-art system solutions excelling equally in profitability, efficiency, and flexibility. An example: the Schaefer Carousel System (SCS).

With its coordinated components and process flows, the modular high-performance system for dynamic paperless order picking offers maximum storage location capacity as well as quickest access in the most confined space. With the SCS, which was developed a good 18 months ago, a supplier has succeeded for the first time ever in implementing the record performance of up to 1,000 picks per hour and module.

The fully automatic SCS combines the advantages of compact carousel systems with an innovative further development of conventional storage and retrieval machines. In its standard version, the SCS module consists of four carousels with up to 6,000 bin storage locations, from which up to four workplaces are supplied according to the Goods-to-Man principle. Storage bins are stored and retrieved by two novel and fully automatic handling systems. The bins are retrieved from their storage locations in the four carousel systems and transferred to the integrated conveyor system, which takes them to the order-picking positions. Due to the decoupling and parallelization of storage, retrieval, and transport processes on the one hand and manual order-picking on the other hand, a capacity that is twice that of conventional systems on the market is implemented. Additionally, the special system design of SCS offers an order-picking and storage capacity increased by a factor of six to ten, storage compaction of up to 50 percent, complete abolition of picker walking times, and significantly reduced staff requirements. As a scalable and modularly designed carousel system, the SCS can also be adjusted quickly to individual requirements and is promptly ready for operation. When capacity requirements increase and when order volume or throughput rise, the Schaefer Carousel System will simply adapt itself thanks to the installation of additional modules. This ensures short implementation times and lasting investment protection. Consequently, the Schaefer Carousel System can already prove itself in practice at numerous well-known companies.
