Gigantic - Mega-distribution centre for US industry giant Walgreens
In Anderson County, South Carolina, Walgreens Co., the leading drugstore chain in the country, is building one of the largest and most modern distribution complexes in the US.
The construction work for the 70,000 m2 new distribution centre to supply the stores has been underway since March, 2005. A warehouse will be built in the 925,000 m3 area in Anderson County with more that 500,000 storage spaces for palettes and containers.
SSI SCHÄFER was awarded the contract for this challenging project as a sub-contractor. Controlled by a material flow controller, a total of 43 fully-automatic shelf-servicing devices, over 15 km of conveyor and sorting technology, over 100 horizontal carousels by Schäfer Carousel Systems SCS, an automatic storage system for palette goods and other innovative technologies ensure a seamless interaction between technology, people and organisations. A special highlight of the overall project is the installation of over 100 horizontal carousels for the dynamic provision of containers – so far a completely unique application in these dimensions.
After the opening in February, 2007, approx. 450 people will be employed at the new distribution centre of the US industry giant. They will ensure the smooth supply to approximately 700 stores in the south-eastern US, supported by the newest generation of distribution automation.
